I cannot even tell you how immensely grateful I am that facebook, twitter, snapchat, mobile phones were not around during my teenage years and early twenties (basically when i thought I knew everything and actually knew nothing). It is a dangerous, vile and disgusting place. I don’t know how to explain to young people (whom I know on FB) that Yes, you have to stand up for what you believe in, but is social media really the platform? Yes, you can be a two-bit whore, a militant right-winger (or left-winger), an alcoholic, drug addict and swear like a sailor but when you apply for that job in “Legal” in say 5 or 6 years time, I really dont think THAT image is going to help you much.
Basically, what i’m saying is that social media is a permanent record of everything you ever put in writing or images. Read that again: social media is a permanent record of everything you ever put in writing or images! Read it again!! The faster you learn that the better.
People WILL judge you. You can stand on your head and shout to everyone “but that’s not what I meant” but in reality, NO ONE REALLY CARES. All they see is what they choose to see. So you can go ahead and post whatever statement or images of yourself you want, proclaim out loud your sexuality to anyone and everyone (NO ONE REALLY CARES), stand up for your rights and your beliefs – and that’s your prerogative (free speech, democracy and all that other stuff that sounds wonderful in theory), just remember, that in 5, 10 years time you’ll be a different person (hopefully if all goes as nature intended) and you WILL cringe at your declarations and I can assure you that you will find it incredibly hard to justify your utterances to future employers, colleagues, even partners, acquintances.
Everyone googles people they meet: FACT. Especially future employers WILL google you! Not to mention that guy / girl you really, really like! And as wonderful as it is to be FREE and declare I AM WHO I AM and fuck the rest, I DONT HAVE TO EXPLAIN MYSELF TO ANYONE ELSE and I DONT CARE WHAT PEOPLE THINK – there will be people in your future, who will have the power to determine your future, who will not give two shits about your explanation and rationalisation of a post you made 10 years ago.
AGAIN: there will be people in your future, who will have the power to DETERMINE your future who will not give two shits about your explanation and rationalisation of a post you made 10 years ago.
So here’s free advice from a grown up, who thought she knew it all when she was 17 and who now knows better and who has worked in Media for over 10 years and who is really concerned about the stuff she sees you young’uns posting every single day that is so seriously detrimental to your future.
use it, dont use it.
You can thank me later. ❤
